The Blue Plastic Bag Brigade (BPBB)

American Writer by Dr. Pietro Savo

Springtime clean-up in New Hampshire begins with neighbors volunteering to pick up garbage thrown out of automobile windows over the winter months. Dumping garbage out of the window of a moving automobile is the bizarre human ritual that was started around the turn of the 20th century by a self-centered rude driver, and the custom stuck, as dumb customs often do!

To the rescue and a sanity check that professes that civilization did not go completely mad due to the fast pace lifestyle resulting from the invention of the automobile. The world plans community events to clean up the mess left behind on our front yards and neighborhood streets. Citizens gratefully volunteering to walk their streets and pick up all the garbage that’s been thrown out of an automobile window. Now with spring upon us the disappearing snow freed the garbage from the wintry tomb, bringing it in plain sight!

During this cleanup process, you get to really experience and appreciate the splendid New England neighborhood scenes normally a blur while you speed by in your automobile at 30 to 50 miles per hour. At those driving speeds, you do not experience your neighbors sitting on their front steps having a cup of coffee, common morning greetings or kind jesters are lost forever, and every neighborhood encounter is a blur. During the blue bag cleanup, family and friends walked together enjoying each other’s company, while sharing views of the countryside.

Collecting car side garbage as a family is fun, we talked, we enjoyed each other’s company at a walking pace and we created garbage collection games. Match the garbage, what we picked up was many types of different soft drink cups from Wendy’s, McDonalds’, and Burger King were the most common types people through out of the window of their moving automobiles. What I found interesting was we did not find any soft drink container lids or straws anywhere, so now I am wondering if there is some kind of collector’s value for that precious item. Do soft drink container lids and straws have some collector value worth investing in; perhaps the next great get rich collectable?

We picked up different things such as articles of clothing, student’s homework papers, food wrappers, and a collection of beer bottles, and Michelob Light traditionally brewed with European hops and a blend of the finest two-row and caramel malts was the choice of garbage two to one. Interesting enough Michelob Light received a D rating from the American Craft Beer Fest; does this mean that people who throw empty Michelob Light bottles out the window do not have a clue about quality beer? The one thing we did not find anywhere was no discarded green currency dollars, not one shred of monetary currency was discovered during the clean up!

The collected garbage is then brought to a central location, carefully separated by plastic, paper, metals, glass, and then recycled with the hopes of earning education grant money to help the neighborhood school budgets. What this all means, is that bad-mannered automobile drivers in their haste have polluted our environment and by the generous nature of neighborhood volunteers, these people have turned this pollution into contributions to education improvements in the community. A natural winning catalyst for everyone is spending quality time with family and friends, enjoying the New England landscape while cleaning up your neighborhood, overall a fantastic New England time! Furthermore, let us not forget learning about the potential collector value from soft drink container lids and straws.
